JetBlue Card from American Express
The JetBlue card from American Express offers a points program that is good for flights on JetBlue Airlines.
The points program for the JetBlue card involves a little math. For every dollar spent using the card, cardholders receive 1 Awards Dollar. For every 200 Awards Dollars accrued, cardholders receive 1 trueBlue point. For every 100 trueBlue points, cardholders receive 1 Awards Flight. To take a few unnecessary steps out of the equation, the math works out to $200 (real dollars) spent on the card for every 1 trueBlue point, and $20,000 spent on the card for 1 Awards Flight.
Cardholders earn $5,000 bonus dollars when they make their first purchase with the card (25 trueBlue points), and participate in the Always Double Points program when they make purchases at restaurants, movie theaters, golf courses, sporting events and performing arts events, and on gym memberships and JetBlue flights.
The annual fee for the card is $40, which is reasonable compared with annual fees on other airline rewards cards from American Express. Additional cards can be linked to the account fee-free. The introductory APR is 3.99%, low compared to other American Express airline rewards cards, but once the introductory period is over, the APR goes up into the high range that most American Express airline rewards cards reside within.
The card is good for someone who will spend at least $20,000 on the card and uses JetBlue services frequently. Awards dollars never expire, but points and rewards expire after 1 year. That's what makes it so important to use JetBlue at least once a year. If you accrue just under the number of points you need within a year, you could lose them all and have nothing to show for your rewards program.
It's a poor choice of card for someone who will need to make large purchases and carry a balance. The initial APR is suited fine for this purpose, but the standard APR will cost cardholders a lot of money in finance charges. Review Date: 9/4/2006
