Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from OPEN
The Gold Delta SkyMiles Business credit card from American Express offers cardholders the ability to accrue substantial airline miles for use on Delta and Song airlines.
The SkyMiles card offers point rates of 1 point-per-dollar spent using the card on general purchases. It also offers American Express' Always Double Points program, which gives cardholders 2 points for every dollar spent at supermarkets, gas stations, drugstores, and the United States Postal Service. Additionally, cardholders earn double points when they use the card to pay their wireless phone bills, and when they make purchases with Delta or Song.
During the first six months using the card, cardholders have an opportunity to earn over 20,000 points. When cardholders make their first purchase with the card, they are credited with 10,000 bonus points. Then, if they spend $5,000 or over on the card during the first six months (5,000 points), they are given an additional 5,000 points.
The card is eligible for benefits under American Express' OPEN for small business program. This program offers discounted rates at major businesses such as FedEx, AT&T, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, and Hertz. The OPEN program also offers fee-free additional cards linked to the account and a credit line up to $50,000. There are online account management tools, a community to chat and network with other business owners, and even professional advice available to OPEN members.
The rates for the card are on the high side. The APR is about average for American Express airline rewards cards, which puts it significantly above their other rewards cards. There is an introductory APR of 9.99% for balance transfers requested during the application process. The annual fee is an additional $85, which is waived for the first year. The annual fee is dropped to $30 for customers who already have a charge card account with American Express.
The SkyMiles Business card is good for business owners who can take advantage of the savings on flights. It is certainly not an ideal card for someone who will need to finance business expenses over time. The card would work especially well for a business owner who already had a qualified, low-interest card to use for large purchases. With this they could have the frequent flyer benefits and low annual fee of the SkyMiles card, but have a better option for purchases on which they would have to carry a balance.
